A street in Queens, New York will be named in honor of iconic American punk rock band, the Ramones, on Oct. 23. The Ramones are the next in a line of influential musicians getting recognition in public landmarks and streets across the world.
The Ramones emerged from Forest Hills, Queens in 1974 and are often referred to as the band that first defined the sound of punk rock. Commercial success was a constant struggle for the band but they had an undeniable influence on the ‘70s punk movement, in both the United States and the United Kingdom.
Ramones Way will be located at the intersection of 67th Avenue and 110th Street, which is right in front of the main entrance of Forest Hills High School where the four original band members attended.
New York City Council Member Karen Koslowitz introduced Ramones Way to the council, and it was approved this past summer. The unveiling of the renamed street will take place on Oct. 23 at 11 a.m. EST.
Ramones Way will honor an American music legend, much like Malik “Phife Dawg” Taylor Way, which is on the corner of Linden Boulevard and 192nd Street in the borough’s St. Albans neighborhood. The street was renamed in honor of the late Malik Taylor, better known as ‘Phife Dawg’ of A Tribe Called Quest, who passed away earlier this year from complications with diabetes.
The street renaming in Queens is not the first New York City landmark for the Ramones.
In 2003, a sign for Joey Ramone Place was put on display in Downtown Manhattan, between Bowery and East 2nd Street. The sign is in close proximity to where CBGB once was – a famous punk club where the Ramones first got their start. Other notable acts that were first associated with CBGB during that time include Blondie, Talking Heads, Television, the Patti Smith Group, the Misfits, and the Beastie Boys.
There are several cities across the globe that have also chosen to honor music legends with street names such as AC/DC, the Flaming Lips, Jay-Z, and Run DMC. The Ramones made quite the impact, and now they will forever be immortalized with Ramones Way, a fitting legacy.
