The Royal family wore black for Prince Philip’s funeral that took place on the 17th of April. Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth, went a step further and added special crown jewels to her ensemble.
The Queen wore the Richmond Brooch on her left lapel. Moreover, the jewelry features a detachable pearl and can be worn as a necklace. Queen Mother passed it down to her.
Besides that, Queen Mother gave Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the brooch on her wedding day. Therefore, The Queen wore it when she laid her husband to rest.
What Does the Brooch Feature?
The piece is a diamond set with a large center pearl. The brooch has many romantic connections in the Royal family line. Furthermore, Queen Mary wore it as a necklace for her honeymoon.
Queen Elizabeth wore it in the past too. Mostly, to royal engagements and to the Royal British Legion Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall 2018.
Duchess Kate’s Tribute
Duchess Kate Middleton paid tribute to her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana, and to the monarch. Kate wore Princess Diana’s jewelry – a pearl choker and pearl earrings.
30 members of the Royal Family attended the funeral. The ceremony was small because of COVID-19.
However, the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, did not attend the ceremony. The doctor advised her not to travel too far as she is pregnant.
Duchess Meghan’s tribute
Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle paid her tribute to Prince Phillip despite the distance. The Duchess sent a handwritten card and a wreath in memory of Prince Harry’s grandfather.
Besides that, Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan put together a heart-touching wreath by choosing flowers related to the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip’s life.
They chose the national flower of Greece, to represent the Duke of Edinburgh’s heritage, Acanthus Mollis (Bear’s breeches), and Eryngium (Sea Holly) to symbolize the Royal Marines. Prince Harry shared his tribute and here is what he said:
“He will be remembered as the longest-reigning consort to the Monarch, a decorated serviceman, a Prince, and a Duke. But to me, like many of you who have lost a loved one or grandparent over the pain of this past year, he was my grandpa: master of the barbecue, legend of banter, and cheeky right until the end.”
Prince Harry wore his medals on his suit during the procession and funeral ceremony.
