NYC is known for being one of the best cities in America to have a good time. Therefore, attractions are scattered throughout to help people have fun whenever they want it. However, if you’re looking to increase your heart rate or chill out, there are haunted houses scattered across different boroughs that will leave you petrified.

This list is ranked based on the well-known places, scary factors, and overall value. The average ticket price ranges from $12-$30 with an additional cost if you plan on going through multiple times. This time of year is perfect for scaring yourself half to death because it’s dark outside nearly 24/7. Make sure to bring some cash because many places accept cards. Hell Gate Haunted Night

Hell Gate is not your average haunted house. You’ll be outside with the rest of the trick or treaters, and it runs from dusk until 11 pm on Friday and Saturday nights in October. As you enter Hell Gate, there’s a hayride that takes you down dark roads to find ancient graves, burnt houses, and more than likely ghosts and murderers! When I went last year, some very creepy clowns were staring at us as we walked through the cornfield, waiting for our wagon to pull up. If you’re looking for some nighttime scares, then head over to Hell this October!

Terror Behind the Walls at Eastern State Penitentiary

This haunted house is located within an abandoned prison operational until 1994. The prison itself is very creepy just by standing outside of it because armed guards are watching over the entire 27 acres that it occupies. The whole concept of this one is that you follow different stories throughout the prison then come through different rooms where people scare you at every turn! It’s really fun and not too scary, so if you’re younger than 16, I would recommend checking this place out!

The Haunted Graveyard at Trinity Church

This attraction is another one that’s all outside and terrifying! It’s right in the heart of the Financial District, so you’re not going to find a parking spot or anything like that. If you decide to go, it’ll be $2 for every minute past 7 pm and will take around 20 minutes depending on how fast you walk. The graveyard runs from October 10th-31st and has events every night except for Mondays and Tuesdays. They have fake blood galore when walking into this attraction, but they do not spare any expense on the decorations. This is definitely one of the scariest ones I’ve ever been to, so if you’re feeling brave, then I would recommend this for sure.

The Stepping Stones Haunted House

Located in Staten Island, NYC, this haunted house is one that takes place inside an actual residence! If you don’t feel like going through a haunted house and want to pet all of the animals, they have a ton at home too. They have two separate waiting lines: to get into the haunted house and another line to walk around with your friends and see all of the animals without being scared out of your mind! However, if you go through their haunted house, it’s really cool because two different attractions are intertwined, leaving you wondering what is real and what isn’t. They have signs for this attraction all up and down the streets of Staten Island, so it’s definitely not hard to find!

Queen Mary Dark Harbor

This haunted ship has been around since 1967 and is located in Long Beach, California. This place is known as one of the scariest places in America because there are mirrors everywhere that trick your eyes into thinking people are behind you when they’re just reflections off of the glass. It’s also got a ton of great acts throughout the night aboard the Queen Mary, which makes it an overall amazing experience! I would recommend going during October because their lights start going off a week before Halloween, and they have something going on every night. It’s so much fun, and the only downside is that it’s located all the way across the country from you!

The 13th Gate

This haunted house in NYC has been around since 1997 and was even featured on Ghost Adventures, one of my favorite shows ever! So naturally, I had to go there at least once during its 17-year history. They have 13 different attractions within the haunted house, including a few mazes with completely different themes and a huge outdoor maze called Club Hell with a ton of zombies roaming around. There are also tons of actors inside each room trying to scare you, making this place difficult to navigate through! Just be careful, because it’s really easy to get lost in there even if you go through it multiple times, but that also makes it more fun!

The Dent Schoolhouse

 This one is definitely on the same level as the 13th Gate haunted house with its different stories and rooms that are told throughout the whole house, which keeps you wondering what’s next. It was actually featured on Ghost Adventures as well, so they must have done something right! They claim to be “Cincinnati’s most terrifying haunted attraction,” and I can’t say I disagree because this place has all of its bases covered when it comes to scaring people. There are over 10,000 square feet of entertainment, including tons of great actors who do their job really well by scaring you multiple times throughout the whole house. They also have a huge outdoor area where they do laser tag, which is so much fun if you’re not in the mood to scare yourself half to death! I recommend this one because it’s really easy to get lost in there, so go with friends and try not to break any mirrors or else their ghosts will haunt your dreams.

Headless Horseman Hayrides & Haunted Houses

 This place in NYC takes about 40-50 minutes, depending on how fast of a walker you are, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t worth the wait! Their hayride has chairs that move back and forth while you listen to a storyline going on simultaneously, which makes for an awesome experience. It’s not one of those boring hayrides where you sit there listening to some guy talk the whole time; it’s very entertaining. The haunted house is also pretty long with about 5 or 6 different rooms, so they give you your money’s worth, making it worth the trip up there.
