Get To The Staten Island Ferry

The Staten Island Ferry transports between Manhattan and Staten Island. As a matter of fact Staten Island Ferry provides 22 million people a year.

The Staten Island Ferry is run by the City of New York for one pragmatic reason: To transport Staten Islanders to and from Manhattan. Yet, the 5-mile, 25-minute ride also provides a majestic view of New York Harbor and a no-hassle, even romantic, boat ride, for free!

Furthermore, you will see the skyscrapers and bridges of Lower Manhattan receding as you pull away and coming into focus again as you return. It is a brilliant way to plan a calm day out while enjoying and learning the iconic landmarks and views of New York City.

Governor’s Island

Here, you ned to note that it is free to visit Governor’s Island on Saturdays and Sundays before noon. However, after that time period or on weekdays it costs USD 3 access to the 172-acre island. Usually the island is open May through September.

The fort-studded island is seven minutes by ferry from Manhattan, and threaded with cycling and walking trails. Each summer, ferries travel the short distance from Manhattan and Brooklyn across to the 172-acre oasis. It is easily walkable but cycling is a very pleasant way to get around.

In addition to that, Governors Island has  50 abandoned buildings, including a theater, a hospital, a chapel and two former military forts. While you can’t go inside these buildings for now, you can wander around their landmarked exteriors to get a sense of the island’s history. You can also sail down Slide Hill’s 57-foot eponymous attraction.

Furthermore, it is a perfect picnic spot – bring your own food to Governors Island. Set up a camp at one of the picnic tables or shaded lawns. For diners who prefer even more DIY (Do It Yourself) projects, reserve one of the island’s grilling stations in advance.
