Recently, Vogue began “Open Minded: Unpacking Anxiety.” Supermodel, Kendal Jenner talked about her experiences with anxiety on the show’s first episode. She opened up about the symptoms that came along with it too.
Dr. Ramani Durvasula sat with Kendall Jenner during the show. Doctor Ramani Durvasula is a licensed clinical psychologist and professor of psychology. They discussed anxiety in the interview. The magazine published the interview on its YouTube channel on Thursday.
Kendall said at the beginning of the video that “I am very aware of my anxieties. And I do not like the pity party. I do not like talking about when I do not feel too well. I do not know. I’m a little nervous just being kind of open about what I struggle with, and making it known to other people is a bit nerve-wracking.”
She recalled her experience with anxiety at an early age. Kendall revealed it became worse as her she got into the limelight as a super model.
“I think being overworked and being in the situation that I am in now is kind of what like set it out of control in a way,” Jenner said.
She felt like dying and wanted to be rushed to the hospital. At times, she experiences numb limbs too. She added that being rich and famous does not stop the disorder from afflicting her.
“I still have one of these,” Jenner said while pointing to her brain. “That thing up there does not always … it is not always happy and it’s not always connecting.”
Doctor Ramani’s Point of View on Anxiety
Doctor Durvasula said every person she has come across at her private practice Los Angeles dealt with various disorders. She is calling for the de-stigmatization of mental disorders — especially anxiety.
Almost 40 million adults in the United States are affected with anxiety disorders according to ADAA (Anxiety and Depression Association of America). However, only 36.9% receive treatment.
Furthermore, Durvasula told Jenner that “Anxiety is a continuum.”
Furthermore, some people experience milder anxiety while for others it affects their relationships, home and work. Doctor Durvasula said it is known as clinically significant anxiety.
In addition to that, Kendall Jenner said she experienced social anxiety about emerging from solitude after the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Now that things are slowly opening up, if I go to a dinner or if I see a few more of my friends that I am not used to seeing throughout this last year, it gives me anxiety,” she said.
Moreover, Jenner to asked Durvasula questions from viewers about the topic and received few tips on how to manage anxiety. By the end of the video, Jenner thanked Durvasula. Kendall said she learned a lot.
“I appreciate you sharing your story because I’m always grateful when people talk about their stories publicly so people can see they aren’t alone with this,” Durvasula told Jenner.
“I think the hardest thing of all is to feel alone.”
