Jesy Nelson, 21, opens up about leaving Little Mix. She said she is happier than ever after her exit from the girl band.

Jesy explained that she took some time for herself, away from the spotlight and the studio. She discovered new confidence through that.

“I didn’t know that I could be this happy. I thought when I was in the group that it was just normal to feel that way. And because I’d felt like that for ten years, I just thought, ‘This is life.’ Since I’ve left, I feel free. I don’t wake up with anxiety, thinking, ‘I’ve got to do a music video today, I need to starve myself.’ Or, ‘I need to go on an extreme diet so I can look like the other three.’ That was consuming me,” Jesy told the Cosmopolitan U.K.

According to Ms.Nelson, she compared herself to the other three girls; Leigh-Anne Pinnock, Perrie Edwards, and Jade Thirlwall. In addition to that, haters trolled her on social media and made her feel like the odd one out.

 “Now I feel like me. When I look back [at my time] in the band, I genuinely wasn’t me. I can’t believe how miserable I was,” Jesy said.

Furthermore, Jesy Nelson revealed that during the lockdown, the girls reunited to film the music video for their single “Sweet Melody”. The song is from their last album ‘Confetti’.  Consequently, Jesy went through an ‘extreme diet’ to keep fit for the video. She ‘found it so hard’ to be a carefree pop star.

 “There’s a scene in ‘Sweet Melody’ I’m not in, because that’s when I had a panic attack and broke down. I was like, ‘I just want to go home.’ I was sobbing in the dressing room. Someone really close to me said, ‘This has got to stop. You can’t keep doing this to yourself,” she recalled.

Cutting Ties With The Little Mix Girls

Jesy Nelson wants to ‘sever ties’ and therefore, she has not spoken directly in months with her ex band mates. Several insiders have claimed that communications between Jesy and the trio have broken down. Moreover, Little Mix is nominated in the Best British Group category at Tuesday’s Brit awards. However, there are no plans for them to perform together at the Brits Awards.

Jesy Nelson Goes Solo

Jesy is working on a solo act now. She said she is creating music that sounds more like what she listens to that Little Mix’s tracks.

 “I feel like there have been a few people who don’t understand why I left Little Mix but am now in the studio making music. A lot of people said, ”I thought you came out of the band to focus on your mental health? For people to think that I would just stop working completely is crazy, because [for] me, working on my mental health is going to the studio, and creating music that I love. That’s what clears my head and makes me happy,” she explained.
