Derek Chauvin, 45, found guilty of murder. The former Minneapolis Police office knelt on George Floyd’s neck for more than 9 minutes last year. Derek was found guilty on Tuesday of all three charges: second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter.
Jurors deliberated for over 10 hours over two days before coming to their decision. They played videos, illustrated charts, and pictures to show Derek handled George’s death.
Dereck’s bail revoked, he was removed from the court through a side door with handcuffs. They took him to a facility in Stillwater, Minnesota, almost 25 miles east of downtown Minneapolis.
Break-down of the Case
Derek Chauvin assaulted Floyd with his knee. This unintentionally caused Floyd’s death, but it is a second-degree murder charge. Chauvin acted with a ‘depraved mind’ and caused third-degree murder. He caused Floyd’s death with his ‘culpable negligence that led to manslaughter.
Hence, Derek Chauvin could face up to 40 years in prison for second-degree murder, 25 years for third-degree murder, and 10 years for manslaughter. According to Minnesota’s sentencing guidelines, he may serve 12.5 years for each murder charge. Moreover, Chauvin may serve four years for manslaughter charges too. Besides that, the state has asked for a tougher sentence than the recommendations provided.
Judge Peter Cahill said: “Chauvin’s sentencing is set for eight weeks from now.”
On March 29th, opening statements began, and 45 witnesses presented their testimonies. This took about three weeks.
The Other Three Officers
Besides that, Tou Thao, Alexander Kueng, and Thoma Lane are charged with helping and abetting second-degree murder. Moreover, they are charged with helping and abetting second-degree manslaughter too. They have to stand trial this summer.
The Jury
According to information released by the court, the jury comprised seven women and five men. Out of the 12 jurors, four were black, six were white, and two of them were multiracial.
